Founders

Meet the pair behind Pear

Hi, I’m Tallie

The idea for Pear was born out of my own struggle to find a therapist. I was navigating a difficult family situation and I knew I needed some support from someone that had no other involvement in my life. I started looking and, WOW, it was a minefield. Google searches led to endless online directories filled with therapy jargon. I didn’t have a clue what type of therapy I needed or who was the best person to help me. I just wanted to tell someone what I was struggling with and for the right therapist to ap-pear...

This planted the seed that Pear grew from.

After weeks of searching, I did eventually find an amazing therapist who totally changed the way that I look at my life. This has made me so passionate about the impact that great-fit therapists can have on people’s lives.

Oh and I'm also training to be a Psychotherapist. I now understand the jargon so you don’t have to.

And I’m Jo!

I'm a Clinical Psychologist who spent over 15 years training and working within the NHS. I left 5 years ago when I wanted to work flexibly around my family. I now run a private practice, Carlile Psychology Ltd.

I see first hand how confusing and mysterious the therapy process is, and it really doesn’t need to be!

Matching people to great fit therapists doesn’t have to be luck or guesswork. The idea behind Pear is to offer a place where people can come wherever they’re at in their journey and easily find a great therapist based on their individual needs.

I believe that we are all wired differently and what you need to nourish your mental wellbeing will differ hugely from the next person. Pear was founded on the ethos that we want to nurture this individuality and help you find someone that works for you.

Frequently asked questions

We know that we’re doing something quite different to what is currently on offer when you're searching for a therapist so we're expecting lots of questions! If your question isn’t answered here - get in touch with us, we’d love to hear from you.

How much does this service cost?

Our pairing service is totally free, as are your therapist discovery calls. We know finding a therapist can be a daunting task so we wanted to make sure you weren’t out of pocket until you have found your ideal therapist. You will be charged when you start to have full-length sessions with your therapist.

Does Pear offer online or face to face therapy?

The majority of our clients want to work online so their therapist choice is not restricted by geography. However, if you would like to work in person, please let us know during your pairing conversation and we will find you someone in your local area.

How does the Pear pairing process work?

One of our founders, Jo, is a Clinical Psychologist and has designed a short, AI-based conversation based on the information that we need to know in order to pair you with a therapist that will best suit your individual needs. This process takes away the guesswork and allows us to make informed suggestions about an ideal therapist based on what you’re going through and the type of person you are.

I don’t really know where to start. I dont know how to answer the questions about the support I might need?

This is a common feeling, and one of the main reasons we created Pear. Feel free to only answer the questions that you feel you can. We totally appreciate that some people feel overwhelmed and confused by this whole process. A lot of us don’t quite know what we are struggling with or how to put it into words. The conversation is designed to explore what you might know. If the AI conversation feels a little too much right now, send us an email and we can take things from there.

Is my information confidential?

Yes, your information is treated totally confidentially. Our founders, Jo Carlile and Tallie Hopkins, are the only people that have access to the information you provide on this platform and then once we provide your information to your therapist, they will be bound by confidentiality in their code of ethics.

Do I need to have had therapy in the past?

Definitely not! At Pear our pairing process is designed for anyone, regardless of what stage of their own personal therapy journey they are at. Some people have had therapy and are looking to replicate a previous experience, some are looking to try something new. Others are ready to dip their toe into the world of therapy and want some help getting started.

Am I expected to know what I’m looking for?

No, in fact we expect you not to know. Everyone's knowledge about therapy varies. We are all unique and our understanding of our own needs and how they fit into different types of therapy will vary significantly. This is where Pear can help you, we will guide you through the process of finding an ideal therapist regardless of what you might or might not know.

Can I start the pairing process for someone else?

Ideally it would be the therapy seeker who engages with the process. But we also understand that sometimes the very first steps are taken by someone else who cares. Therapist profile suggestions are sent via email so make sure if you are putting the individual's email address you have their permission.

What happens if I don’t like the look of the pairings offered to me?

This is totally fine. Whilst the feedback on the quality of our pairings has been extremely positive so far, we understand that we might not always get it spot on. Our ethos is all about respecting individuality and not putting people in boxes. If you are confused about a pairing, you can reply to the email and we can explain and find some other options if that feels appropriate.

Do I have to follow up on any of the pairings shown to me?

There is absolutely no pressure to follow up. Take this journey at your own pace. Pear therapists are not shown client data so it is up to you to make contact. Please remember that even if you do make contact, there is no obligation to book in with them. All of our therapists offer a minimum of 15-minute consultations so why not have a chat and see how you feel.
